Personal injury protection (PIP) insurance is designed to cover medical bills, funeral bills, and other expenses related to an auto accident, even if the policyholder was at fault. However, this type of coverage can’t be purchased for use in CA, as the state offers MedPay for those who want personal coverage in the event of an accident.
PIP, MedPay, and Liability Insurance
Both MedPay and PIP cover medical expenses and funeral expenses related to auto accidents. Furthermore, both types of coverage also provide compensation for policyholders who are hit by a vehicle while walking, biking, jogging, or even taking public transportation. MedPay doesn’t cover lost wages, like PIP insurance does. However, MedPay policyholders can sue the other party for loss of current and future income if they can prove that the other party was at least partly at fault for the accident.
It’s important to note that liability coverage is completely different from MedPay and PIP. While these two policies cover a policyholder, liability insurance covers the other party affected by the accident. If you’re hit by another driver, that driver’s liability coverage could pay for your medical bills and lost wages. However, PIP insurance or MedPay is a helpful backup if you’re in a hit-and-run accident or the driver at fault is uninsured or underinsured.
